Le Cam Made Simple : Asymptotics of Maximum Likelihood without the LLN or CLT or Sample Size Going to Infinity

چکیده

If the log likelihood is approximately quadratic with constant Hessian, then the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) is approximately normally distributed. No other assumptions are required. We do not need independent and identically distributed data. We do not need the law of large numbers (LLN) or the central limit theorem (CLT). We do not need sample size going to infinity or anything going to infinity. The theory presented here is a combination of Le Cam style involving local asymptotic normality (LAN) and local asymptotic mixed normality (LAMN) and Cramér style involving derivatives and Fisher information. The main tool is convergence in law of the log likelihood function and its derivatives considered as random elements of a Polish space of continuous functions with the metric of uniform convergence on compact sets. We obtain results for both one-step-Newton estimators and Newton-iterated-to-convergence estimators.

Limit Laws of Estimators for Critical Multi - Type Galton – Watson Processes

We consider the asymptotics of various estimators based on a large sample of branching trees from a critical multi-type Galton– Watson process, as the sample size increases to infinity. The asymp-totics of additive functions of trees, such as sizes of trees and frequencies of types within trees, a higher-order asymptotic of the " relative frequency " estimator of the left eigenvector of the mea...

Two-Stage Adaptive Optimal Design with Fixed First-Stage Sample Size

In adaptive optimal procedures, the design at each stage is an estimate of the optimal design based on all previous data. Asymptotics for regular models with fixed number of stages are straightforward if one assumes the sample size of each stage goes to infinity with the overall sample size. However, it is not uncommon for a small pilot study of fixed size to be followed by a much larger experi...

On the Goodness-of-fit Test in a Factor Model with High-dimensional Data

Factor models appear in many areas, such as economics or signal processing. If the factors and errors are Gaussian, a likelihood-based theory is well-known since Lawley (1940). However, these results are obtained in the classical scheme where the data dimension p is kept fixed while the sample size n tends to infinity. This point of view is not valid anymore for large-dimensional data, and usua...

Asymptotic Normality of Posterior Distributions for Exponential Families when the Number of Parameters Tends to Infinity

Exponential families arise naturally in statistical modelling and the maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) is consistent and asymptotically normal for these models [Berk [2]]. In practice, often one needs to consider models with a large number of parameters, particularly if the sample size is large; see Huber [14], Haberman [13] and Portnoy [18 21]. One may also think that the true model can only ...
